Autobiography
Ever since I was a little girl I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Growing up I was the oldest of eight grandchildren and have always liked to teach the younger ones new and exciting things. They looked up to me, and I enjoyed feeling like I was making a difference in their lives. I feel when I become a teacher I will have the opportunities to not only give the children someone to look up to, but also inspire them like my teachers did for me. When I was a high school senior I was blessed with the opportunity to work with the kindergarten students every afternoon throughout the school year. On the second day of my job the teacher explained to the students that I would be coming to work with them every afternoon, the children were thrilled with the idea of having someone else in the room. I remember the feeling when one of the “high schoolers” would come into my classrooms when I was in elementary school, it was the feeling you get when you look up to someone and I could tell by the children’s eyes that they felt the same way I did when I was young. At one point in time I was walking around the room working with the children and I get to one little boy who was taking the wrapping off of his crayons. I said to him“so what do you have going on here?” He said to me “I really just want my crayons to be naked, Miss Sam.” At that point in time it sealed the deal and I knew that there is nothing more I would rather do than become a teacher.I loved this job so much that I even went back after graduation day when the rest of the school district had two more weeks of school.
After I graduated from high school I still wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted to go to college and wasn’t sure if I wanted to be far away from my family, so I started taking classes at the local community college. As I worked toward my associate’s degree in education, I found a job at a child care center on campus as a preschool aide. I am so thankful for that job because it taught me so many things about different types of children. I was able to be part of a classroom full of twenty, three and four year olds. It gave me a good idea how a preschooler works and functions and how their brain works. Every single day was a learning process. It was at this job that I learned one VERY important thing from the lead teacher in my classroom. The thing that she stressed to me most was that you are going to have a schedule and sometimes that schedule is not going to fly. Some days the kids will just not be able to handle what you have planned, she mentioned that always having a backup plan, such as kickball, or duck duck goose, would be very beneficial for the days when the kids just can’t sit still all morning. She told me that a teacher has to be flexible, and that is advice that I will remember throughout my teaching career.
As I look back on my life thus far, so many people have inspired me to become a teacher. My parents, grandparents, and even the teachers I had throughout my elementary and high school years. Some of my favorite teachers inspired me to become a teacher because they shared many techniques for being a good teacher and they had a way with the students. I believe that I was led down this road for a couple of reasons and those reasons were to be a role model for children as well as inspire them, like my teachers did for me.
